Hello Readers! This month, we are reading Funny Story by Emily Henry. In this summer romance novel, we are introduced to Daphne, who has recently been dumped by her fiancé and, in a twist of events, ends up living with her ex-fiancé's new fiancée’s ex, Miles. Sparks fly in this book as Daphne grapples with starting over, healing old wounds, and figuring out what she wants out of life.

  1. Emergency Breakup Funds: In the book, Daphne notes that she has terrible credit and slim savings. Would you consider a breakup a reason to use money saved in an emergency fund? Why or why not
  2. Dream Jobs with Modest Pay: Daphne has her dream job as a children’s librarian, and we also see Miles working a job he enjoys, though we get the sense that both jobs offer modest pay. Throughout the book, how does Daphne make choices that allow her to keep her dream job while still being able to care for herself financially and progress toward her financial goals? How does this compare to the choices Miles makes to support himself?
  3. Managing Salary Differences in Relationships: At the beginning of the book, Daphne is in the unfortunate situation of having to leave her home after her fiancé breaks up with her because her fiancé, Peter, paid the downpayment and mortgage payments for their home due to his higher income. How could Peter and Daphne have split their living expenses differently so they both had a safety net if they broke up?
  4. Inherited Values from Parents: Throughout the book we gain an understanding of the relationships that Daphne and Miles have with their parents. How has Daphne’s childhood translated impacted her financial values? How do you think your childhood has affected your financial values? 
  5. Having A Vision for Your Life: Toward the end of the book, Daphne and most of the other characters in the book start to figure out what they want their lives to look like and start making decisions to move closer to those visions. How did Daphne having a vision for her life that reflected her true desires impact her financial life?
